Term 2 - continuing our A-Z
Term 1 and Term 2 are all about gathering information and resources to help us feel confident to handle the most common first aid casualty scenario's (see the A-Z for all the topics we tackle).
Each pupil has to produce 1 fact file for each injury, condition or ailment. Over the 4 terms we will produce between 10 and 20 fact files. ( 6 topics in term 1, between 6-9 topics in term 2, between 5-8 topics in term 3 and a revision of all topics in term 4)
The topics we will cover this term are:
week 1 - recap term 1 learning and discuss our results from our test.
Task 1: in groups of 3 or 4, you have to create a MIND MAP STUDY CARD for 1 of the 6 topics we covered last term. You will stand up and present your mind map to the rest of the class detailing why you have included the points you have written.
Task 2: using the card, box, paper, pictures, glue and pens you will produce the class STUDY BOX. This box will be used to store the STUDY/REVISION CARDS that we will produce for each ailment, condition or injury that we cover.
week 2 - 1. soft tissue injuries - sprains and strains
Task 1: on your own you will have to prepare a FACT FILE on sprains and strains.
Task 2: In pairs you will attempt to carry out treatment for the sprains and strains you have investigated.
Task 3: In a small group or as a class we will prepare a STUDY CARD to add to our STUDY BOX
Task 4: If you have completed all tasks you will be given time to begin, modify or change your electronic fact file. You should have one of these for each of the topics we cover.
week 3 - 2. burns and scalds (including sun burn and heat stroke)
Task 1: Using the materials Ms V has prepared you will work as a pair to put the fact sheet in order. This will be a timed event. When time is up, you will have to give your completed sheet to another pair in the room. We will then peer mark the correct order. The pair with the highest score wins.
week 4 - 3. heart attack and angina
week 5 - 4. stroke, 5. bites and stings
week 6 - 6. asthma and 7. other allergies
week 7 - 8. diabetes
week 8 - 9. epilespsy
week 9 - assessment week
Task: During period 1 you will be put into pairs or 3's to produce questions and answers you would like to ask the rest of the class on your condition/ailment or injury. You must prepare at least 6 different questions and answers to go along with them.
Assessment for Term 2 will be based on the quality of answers given during a small group Oral Test based on the Study Cards produced by the class for the second 9 ailments/conditions.
If we are struggling to cover all 9 topics we will carry diabetes and epilespy over to term 3.
