Drowning
There doesn't seem to be any links to the NPLQ (national pool lifeguard qualification) in Ayrshire. Glasgow Sport have quite a lot of courses available and advertised throughout the year. You cannot take part in this qualification until you are 16, however it does lead to many benefits;
£3.00 per session
The hour consists of swimmers being taught Lifesaving skills and making swimmers aware of the dangers that can be faced within deep and open water and how to keep safe should they, or others, get into difficulty.
- Qualifies you to apply for a job in a Leisure Centre as a Pool Lifeguard.
- Qualifies you to be able to apply for 'summer camp' jobs in America or Europe - very popular with university and college students who wish to travel around the world but need to work in order to pay their way :0)
- Will help you save your own life and possibly that of someone else.
- Will improve your swim fitness dramatically and help you work on your swim tecnhniques (although swim technique is not the prime focus or that important)

Substance Misuse and Drowning
Research indicates that some recreational, legal or illegal drugs can cause a person to feel very thirsty. This causes them to drink lots of water or other fluids. By doing so, the chemical reaction to the water in the body can cause drowning as fluid build in the lungs.
In other cases due to the altered mind state of a person whilst on a substance 'high' or 'downer' this can cause them to enter water that they would usually know not to.
Their is a higher rate of Brits abroad drowing due to 'drunken' dives, or late night 'swims'.
